National and State Energy and Building Codes Requiring slab edge insulation including ASHRAE, IRC, and the IBC.

ASHRAE 90.1-1989 Requirements for Insulating Slabs-on-Grade

Figure 402L from ASHRAE 90.1- 1989, shows that the edges of concrete slab floors must be insulated.  The diagram shows several common ways to effectively insulate a slab edge.

The first two pictures show insulation on the outside face of the slab with a protective element.  Unknown to the authors, this protective barrier is essentially an EnergyEdge product.

ALL STATES must certify that their building codes meet the requirements in ASHRAE 90.1.

                  International Residential Code 2006 (IRC)

The map of the climate zones as defined by the 2006 International Residential Code separates climate zones 1-3 from climate zones 4-8.  Those areas located north of the line are required to have basement wall, slab edge and crawl space insulation.
